Carleo President Carleo welcomed the committee and asked each member to do self introductions. President Carleo also welcomed two new members to the committee: Ms. Eileen Pearl, representing members at large, and Mr. Arthur Minasyan, Associated Student Union (ASU), representing the student community. Public Comments There were no public comments. Adoption of Minutes for Meeting of May 19, 2009 MSP T. Anderson/H. Berg the minutes were adopted with a correction on Page 2 to correct for verb tense. Presidents Report S. Carleo The Presidents report and the College Program Managers report were presented as one. President Carleo announced that Valley College, as directed by the COLLEGE District, is not offering a second summer session. A copy of 91 Measure J projects was distributed. The Committee saw a presentation regarding Prop A/AA and Measure J last year. A second presentation will be given before we update our college map. Mr. Hau Wen Feng, College Construction Manager (representing CPM Jim Rogers) reported that the new Bond A/AA budget stands at $327 Million. Under this program 24 projects have been completed, 5 are under construction and 4 projects still remain to be completed. (A copy of this report entitled, Los Angeles Valley College Sustainable Building Program Oversight Committee, was distributed. A copy is on file in the Presidents Office). Ms. Pearl asked about changes to the corner of Fulton and Burbank. President Carleo responded that there will be a college entrance off Fulton and Burbank. It will be a diagonal walkway. A second college marquee will be installed on this corner some time in April 2010. A $500,000 donation made by the Krupnick Foundation will be used to renovate the motion picture studios. We received the grant through the College Foundation and a dedication ceremony will take place in the middle of September. The committee will receive an invitation to this event. Mr. Robert Hertzbergs $1 Million commitment for the new Library is being reviewed. 91 $100,000 has been received. It was stated that historical records and books that are currently stored in the Historical Museum will be preserved and housed in the Library. A dedication ceremony for the Allied Health Science Building is also in the plans for October. The Committee was informed that the Child Development Center will be a three- building project clustered together forming a childrens playground in the center. The Child Care Center, the Child Development Department which is an instruction program for adults, and the Family Resource Center will make up the complex. The Family Resource Center project is funded from a separate $1.5 Million donation. This donation was made by J.H. Snider to the College Foundation. This project is scheduled to be completed by December/January. Ribbon cutting will take place some time in the Spring. President Carleo announced there are opportunities to name buildings, benches, and other items on campus. More information on how to name buildings is available on the Foundation website. Some naming opportunities require Board of Trustees approval. President Carleo announced that Steven Erlich, a well known architect who has designed famous buildings, will design our Performing Arts/media Arts Building. The Board of Trustees approved the funding of public outdoor art, such as murals and other art. This will greatly enhance our campus. The Life Science building was converted to a regular classroom building. After removing all the labs and hazardous material, this vintage building has been completely renovated. The Student Services building project bid came under what was originally planned. 91 $4 million in savings will be used for other college projects. Regarding the Planetarium, President Carleo reported that the disabled access facility has been completed. Also, a new classroom has been added. The Planetarium will be open this fall. In response to an inquiry regarding Community Services, President Carleo responded that this program is a self-funding program. The program fees cover the salary of the instructors. Community Services offers not-for-credit courses in personal development. The Performance Arts Center and the Media Arts Center will be housed on Parking Lot B. Therefore, this parking lot will be redesigned. Signage to this building will be visible from the Oxnard Street. A BUG group has been created for the Performance Arts/Media Arts Building. We should have a preliminary design report by our next meeting. The challenge we will face is the budget for this project. A Student Center will include a bookstore, cafeteria, student lounge and other offices. President Carleo announced that Mr. Ken Ashford who was the college representative to the Districts Oversight Committee has stepped down from this position; therefore, Valley College is looking for a member to represent the College at the District. This person would attend quarterly meetings in downtown Los Angeles and report back to our committee. Committee members were invited to consider this position, and to notify the President if interested. Members Concerns/Suggestions for the 91 Board of Trustees There were none.
